The SCHLHC hosted its is first Promotores de Salud (Peer Health Educators) Conference Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29. The presentations focused on roles and training for Spanish-speaking and Hispanic-serving community health workers and those agencies and organizations working with promotores de salud – or wanting to engage promotores in the future. The keynote speaker was Mrs. Margarita Holguin, Director of the Chula Vista Community Collaborative.

Mrs. Florence SIman, the leader of El Pueblo, a community-based organization which works with promotores to deliver health education and outreach, presented information regarding training and working with promotores.

 

Mrs. Rosa Villoch-Santiago, MPH, the director of Health Disparities Reduction for the Hispanic/Latino Population in the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society. She discussed promotores' roles in advocating for community health.

 

Mrs. Maggie Ortiz, the Hispanic Outreach Coordinator of Family Connections, provided information regarding immigrants' rights.

Overall, the conference was a great success. Over 100 promotores and leaders of health-related organizations attended this conference. More information and pictures of the event are coming soon.
